How to enhance the longevity of a concrete driveway with rebar

A concrete driveway should be strong enough to provide support to the cars and trucks which may drive over it. The concrete driveway should be constructed in such a manner so that the longevity of your house is enhanced.

Normally, the thickness of concrete driveway slabs remain 4 inches but the thickness can be 6 inches to give extra support for large trucks and other heavy vehicle traffic.

Preferably, the slab contains some type of reinforcement inside. One common building reinforcement material is rebar.

Rebar: Rebar is built up with steel and has been employed for more than 150 years to reinforce concrete construction. Concrete slabs are extremely susceptible to cracking, and rebar facilitates to control cracks from being expanded since sections of cracked slabs move apart.

Rebar verses Mesh: Welded wire mesh is a good substitute to rebar for driveway reinforcement. The mesh comprises of galvanized panels of welded wire. Heavy gauge welded wire mesh panels arrange reinforcement for driveways which are not regularly steered with heavy vehicles like construction vehicles or industrial trucks.

Mesh is generally applied by the contractors who pour 4 inches thick driveway concrete as it is a finer reinforcement and not very costly as compared to rebar.

To pour in a thicker driveway, number three rebar should be applied, that is 3/8 inches in diameter, for reinforcement.

Applying Rebar: Rebar will be very effective in a driveway for which 5-6 inches of concrete is poured. It is due to rebar is relatively thicker as compared to galvanized mesh reinforcement. In order to apply rebar reinforcement in a perfect way, make sure that it is placed in the center or marginally over the center of the slab's thickness.

For this purpose, concrete pros hold up the rebar grids on special metal or plastic supports, known as "chairs." The bricks and other scrap material can also be employed for supports, but it can produce weak spots in the slab. Rebar grids are built up by placing the pieces of bar in a perpendicular pattern, with equal span.

The bars are secured jointly at each intersection through metal wire. The edges of the grid should be retained at same gaps from all sides of the slab, and the minimum coverage of concrete should be retained all through the slab.

Basic differences among RC slab and RB slab

RC Slab: RC Slab stands for a horizontal structural component of steel reinforced concrete. Generally, the thickness of RC slab varies from 100mm to 500mm. RC Slabs are frequently applied as floorings, ceilings etc. Slabs are supported on two sides only or contain beams on all four sides.
RC slabs are erected with formwork, that is generally created with wooden planks, boards, plastic & steel. In recent times, prefabricated RC slabs are also utilized. RC Slab is also termed as Reinforced Concrete Slab that arranges reinforcement for retaining the strength of the structure. Straight bar and alternative cranked bars are also applied as reinforcement in the RC slabs.
RB slabs: RB slab stands for a reinforced brick slab that is suitable for floorings and ceilings. RB slab is erected with steel reinforcement arranging spacing with the bricks. The construction cost of RB slab is less with regard to RC slab.
An RC slab alias Reinforced Cement slab is found in buildings and in bridge construction. The reinforcement is provided with steel bars which are arranged with some distances according to design and based on the load the slab has to undergo.
An RB slab alias Reinforced Brick slab is ideal for roofs in buildings. It is less costly as compared to RC slabs. The reinforcement is provided with steel bars which are arranged with some distances according to design and based on the load the slab has to undergo.
The distance among the bars is occupied by bricks which are arranged on its edge. The depth of the slab remains 4.5 in. The bars are provided among the bricks in both directions. The cement-sand mortar along with least possible water quantity is used to fill up the distance among the bars.
As bricks are permeable, the slab should be plastered with cement-sand plaster having a water-proofing compound added on the upper surface. On the bottom part of the slab, the plaster should be done with a cement-sand plaster for superior look.

Some outstanding ideas to design your home with Concrete

Besides, concrete, other materials like steel, fibre, plastic, glass, wood and other superior materials can also be used together with concrete to build up homes. Now-a-days, concrete is extensively utilized for the construction of commercial, residential, institutional, and industrial buildings due to it’s adaptability, cost-effectiveness and the easy accessibility of raw materials for production.

In recent times, concrete home construction is gaining popularity because of the factors like sustainability, green building, disaster resistance, energy conservation, and safety. To satisfy these requirements efficiently, the engineers offer some unique design ideas.

Concrete Home Design Ideas: Designers have provided different types of design ideas for the construction of concrete homes owing to its versatility and easy accessibility of construction materials. Motivations that put into effect or head over to new design ideas are dissimilar, as for example, some design ideas get inspiration from nature while some from energy efficiency, aesthetics, sustainability, and recycling materials.

Advantages of Concrete Homes:

1. Stable
One of the most outstanding properties of concrete is its strength which offers comfortable shelter from inclement weather, and minimizes property damage while safeguarding from severe weather and natural disasters.

2. Long-lasting
Future maintenance is not required for home as a result the construction cost is reduced significantly.

3. Adaptable
Concrete is a multifaceted material from which any shape and form can be developed. This features facilitates the designers to produce innovative designs on the basis of the demand of client and situations under considerations.

4. Eco-Friendly
The materials necessary to develop concrete are accessible in local areas. Recycled materials like recycled aggregate, pozzolanic cementitious materials like fly ash and silica fumes are utilized to build up concrete.

It results in decreasing CO2 emission throughout cement production since a smaller quantity of cement is required for production.

5. Advantages throughout life-cycle of the Structure
Concrete homes offer various advantages and benefits all through their life span. As for example, chills inside area of the house and consequently curtail energy consumption, and give protection against disasters like fire; hurricane; earthquake; and flood.

Besides, concrete contains low volatile organic compound and it does not impact indoor air quality. Finally, it can be recycled to develop recycled concrete aggregate.
