Turner Construction is conducting an exclusive construction educational program in USA

Western Kentucky University, Department of Architectural and Manufacturing Sciences, is seeking an Assistant Professor for construction Management with a full-time, 9 month appointment commencing from January 2015. This position will be applicable for WKU’s main campus in Bowling Green, KY, a city of 54,000, situated about 60 miles north of Nashville, TN, and 120 miles south of Louisville, KY. The Department of Architectural and Description: The ideal candidate should have sound teaching & student advising capabilities as well as engagement in funded research and dissemination of research results through publication. Construction Safety Management and Engineering – a handy book for beginners

Construction Safety Management and Engineering, the much cherished book edited by Darryl C.Hill, has produced its second edition.

The article of John Gambatese thoroughly discusses their importance. This piece provides excellent knowledge about why the incentives should use or when it should not be used.

The next section considers legal aspects of construction safety, including relevant chapters on managing multiemployer work sites, subcontractor liability and regulatory requirements. These three chapters provide an excellent foundation for learning the critical drivers for construction operations where so many different employers are engaged and the employer is faced with almost countless opportunities for safety-context liability concerns in a regulated environment.

Next, the technical topic areas provide admirable depth of coverage and detail. On fall protection, Ellis aptly balances technical detail with the appropriate level of coverage demanded of a technical reference. Brian Clark and Sathyanarayanan Rajendran discuss steel erection and provide ample discussion of prework, rigging, fall protection, structural stability, fasteners and decking. No construction safety handbook would be complete without John Palmer's coverage of scaffolding, Philip and Ciaran McAleenan's chapter on ladders, and David MacCollum's discussion of cranes. Each of these chapters provides appropriate technical detail and supporting material such as illustrations and glossaries.

Kraig Knutson and Dennis Neitzel provide basic but essential discussion of electrical safety, which is an important aspect of all construction projects. Hayslip does not disappoint in the chapter on excavation and trenching safety. He offers a good level of technical detail and provides extensive illustrations of the concepts (e.g., trench boxes, sloping, angling, and pneumatic systems), specifications and regulations related to excavation and trenching protection systems. Samuel Gualardo provides thorough coverage of power-line concerns and, while one could argue that this topic should have been included with the electrical safety chapter, he does a good job of addressing the unique hazards and concerns of power lines on a construction site.

The demolition chapter by Dave Korman covers a topic that many may not think of when considering construction operations, which is usually a building process. However, demolition is not only a common construction activity; it often must be done to make way for the new construction.

In the category of "Other Considerations," several accomplished authors and practitioners discuss the essential topics that help to complete this well-rounded reference book, including ergonomics, work zone traffic safety control, healthcare, MSHA regulations and their applicability to construction, managing communications in a crises, construction safety and health certification, partnerships and alliances, safety and health issues in construction, the Spanish-speaking workforce and future safety issues.

This book is well balanced, well organized, thorough and accurate. Hill has done an excellent job of organizing and producing such a monumental publication and assembling nothing but the best in all of the authors. Anyone with construction safety responsibilities should have this book on his/her library shelf.

70% Global Construction Growth Expected by 2025

Based on the research and analysis by Global Construction Perspectives and Oxford Economics, the world’s largest construction markets rank in the year 2025 are expected to be China, U.S., India, Japan, Indonesia and Russia.

This report, sponsored by Aconex, estimates that the construction volume all over the globe will grow up to $15.0 trillion in 2025, as the industry’s contribution to the worldwide gross domestic product (GDP) increases from 12.2% to 13.5%.

Global Construction 2025 considers construction markets in 46 countries that create 85% of world output. It is a precise report with 328 pages including 683 charts and tables, besides the executive summary offers a comprehensive overview in a quick read.


The regional forecasts of the report reflect the trends seen in the business scenario over the years. As per the report China, India and the U.S. are the three countries that will be accountable for 60% growth from 2012 to 2025, with China being responsible for more than 25% of the global volume. By 2025, the report predicts, Indonesia will grow annually by 6% to attain the position of world’s fifth largest market. The North American market is also supposed to grow by about 40%, representing a rebound of construction in the U.S. as well as the improved infrastructure and oil & gas related building in Canada. Bill Hocking, executive vice-president of Skanska confirmed that the firm will tilt its UK business towards infrastructure from 2015 to 2020, after restructuring its senior management.


Skanska is expected to divide the business 55:45 between infrastructure and building. He also said that infrastructure and building have been hovering around 45 and 55% over the past decade. Currently, it is around 50:50 and the firm sees the infrastructure picking up to be 55:45.

Skanska UK announced that a 2020 business plan for the contractor will be developed by its infrastructure services manager Deirdre Murphy. She has been managing the infrastructure services operation for the company since 2008 and has led the acquisition of Atkins’ highways services business. The acquisition of Atkins’ highways services business had brought an additional £180m of annual revenue to Skanska UK and had increased the number of employees by 1,200.

Mike Putnam, the Skanska chief executive said that in order to take advantage of UK economic growth, the company was changing its management. Skanska has moved managing director of Skanska UK’s civil engineering arm Greg Craig who will run the infrastructure services business and, to permit Ms Murphy to work on the review.

As per Mr. Hocking, the weather resilience of the UK’s transport infrastructure would be reviewed. He feels that there should be a root and branch review of transport infrastructure resilience over the year which would lead to major investment.

To allow Ms Murphy to work on the review, Skanska has moved other staff as well. Greg Craig, the managing director of Skanska UK’s civil engineering arm, will run the infrastructure services business and the operations director of the civil engineering business, Thomas Faulkner, will replace him.
