How to design rectangular and T shape beam

Beams are defined as members which are exposed to flexure. So, it is important to give attention to the analysis of bending moment, shear and deflection.

When the bending moment operates on the beam, bending strain is created. The resisting moment is formed with internal stresses. Under positive moment, compressive strains are developed in the top of the beam and tensile strains in the bottom.

Concrete is weak against tensile strength and it is not perfect for flexure member by itself. The tension side of the beam will collapse prior to failure of compression side when beam is exposed to a bending moment devoid of the reinforcement. To resolve this issue, steel reinforcement is provided on the tension side. The steel reinforcement withstands all tensile bending stress as tensile strength of concrete is zero when cracks are formed.

Rectangular beam

Accept the depth of beam with the ACI code reference, least thickness until the deflection is considered.
Accept the beam width (ratio of width and depth is approx 1:2).

Calculate self-weight of beam & design load.
Work out factored load (1.4 DL + 1.7 LL).
Calculate design moment (Mu)
Work out maximum possible nominal moment for singly reinforced beam (φM n ).

Determine reinforcement type by making comparison between the design moment (M u ) and the maximum possible moment for the singly reinforced beam (φM n ). If φM n remains under Mu, the beam should be designed as a doubly reinforced beam otherwise the beam should be designed with tension steel only.

Find out the moment strength of the singly reinforced section (concrete-steel couple).

Calculate the necessary steel area for the singly reinforced section.
Determine an essential residual moment, deducting the total design moment and the moment capacity of the singly reinforced section.
Calculate the extra steel area from the required residual moment.
Calculate the total tension and compressive steel area.
Design the reinforcement with the selection of the steel.
Verify the actual beam depth and assumed beam depth.

T-shape Beam

Calculate the design moment (Mu ).
Presume the effective depth.
Choose the effective flange width (b) depending on ACI criteria.

Workout the practical moment strength (φM n ) anticipating the total effective flange is supporting the compression.

When the practical moment strength (φM n ) is greater than the design moment (Mu ), the beam is measured as a rectangular T-beam with the effective flange width b. If the practical moment strength (φM n ) is not more than the design moment (Mu ), the beam will operate as a true T-shape beam.

Determine the approximate lever arm distance for the internal couple.
Work out the approximate required steel area.

Design the reinforcement
Verify the beam width
Calculate the actual effective depth and analyze the beam

How beams are categorized on the basis of different factors

In structural engineering, various structural members are titled on the basis of their behavior under applied load. If the primary mode of delivering the load occurs due to bending then the structural member is known as beam. It can be also said that a beam belongs to a structural component that has the ability to resist load initially by making resistance against bending.

Beams usually bear vertical gravitational forces but can also be applied for bearing horizontal loads (e.g., loads originate because of an earthquake or wind). The loads which beam bear are transmitted to columns, walls, or girders and which then transfer the force to the adjoining structural members and lastly to the ground.

Categorization of Beam: Beams are distinguished with their support condition, profile (shape of cross-section),geometry, equilibrium condition, and their material.

Categorization on the basis of supports: Categorization of beams on the basis of support condition is essential since the bending moment functioning on the beam is directly influenced by the support condition. The difference can be seen in the bending moment diagrams given below. For the equivalent length and loading the bending moment diagram fluctuates significantly with change in support condition.

Simply supported – Beams are supported on the ends which can rotate easily without any moment resistance.

Fixed – Beams are supported on both ends and constrained from rotation.

Over hanging – Simple beams which are expanded beyond its support on one end.

Double overhanging – Simple beams with both ends extending beyond its supports on both ends.

Continuous – Beams are expanded over in excess of two supports.

Cantilever – A projecting beam that is fixed only at one end.

Trussed – A beam is reinforced with the inclusion of a cable or rod to develop a truss.

Categorization on the basis of profile: The type and magnitude of internal stress created in the beam is directly reliant on the shape of the cross-section, thus categorization is necessary on the basis of profile.

Rectangular Beams: I-Beams, T-Beams, C-Beams, Other Cross-sections

Categorization on the basis of geometry: The type and magnitude of internal stress created in the beam is also directly reliant on the geometry of the beam, thus categorization is necessary on the basis of geometry.

Straight Beams, Curved Beams, Tapered Beams

Categorization based on indeterminacy: The design of beam is mainly created for bending moment and shear force. Assessment of these bending moments and shear force is called analysis. A beam is classified into following two categories on the basis of the type of analysis necessary to work out the reaction:

Statically determinate beams: equilibrium conditions tolerable to compute reactions.e.g. simply supported beams, cantilever beams, single and double overhanging beams etc.

Statically indeterminate beams: Deflections (Compatibility conditions) together with equilibrium equations should have been applied to determine the reactions.e.g. propped cantilever, continuous beams, fixed beams.

Categorization on the basis of the material: Various materials contain different advantages and drawbacks for being utilized as a building material for erecting the beams concerning cost and usage, as a result beams are also classified on the basis of the material used for their construction.

Combined Pad Foundation Design Spreadsheets

Combined Pad Foundation Design Spreadsheets comprise of a series of spreadsheets which can be used for stability analysis and structural design of a combined rectangular pad foundation.

The spreadsheets evaluate the loadings input by the user and work out the best possible pad size to transmit these loads into an tolerable bearing pressure into the soil.

Unique Pad Sizing and Eccentricity Charts simplify the process for the designer to opt for the best pad dimensions.

As soon as the pad size is set, the spreadsheets then workout the design bending moments and the necessary reinforcement in both X and Y directions for sagging and hogging. The designer can then indicate the perfect reinforcement arrangement with unique recommended reinforcement chart which demonstrates graphically the existing reinforcement arrangements to fulfil both necessary cross sectional area and spacing requirements.

Then a summary page is formed and a reinforcement drawing is produced to provide the perfect reinforcement arrangements which the user has indicated.

The suite comprises of a total of 4 spreadsheets :

• A simple combined pad design spreadsheet to make analysis of a simple combined pad foundation depending on two axial loads where the consequential load must operate through the centroid of the base.

This spreadsheet is ideal for most cases and facilitates making design rapidly for straight forward situations.

• A complex integrated pad design spreadsheet that can easily analyze any combined rectangular pad foundation on the basis of axial, horizontal or moment loadings.

These spreadsheets contain all the tools to design complicated issues or where close attention should be given to detail. It can deal with any size rectangular pad and rectangular columns to where space is restricted in one direction. The spreadsheet also arranges the base for being loaded eccentrically in any arrangement required by the designer.

It comprises sliding analysis to rationalize any horizontal loads. It involves design charts to make brief analysis of shear and punching shear loads, and comprises of bending moment and shear force diagrams to facilitate the designer to design the reinforcement in as much detail.

Both simple and complex spreadsheets are available to abide by either British Standards BS8110 & BS8004 or Eurocodes BS En 1992 & BS En 1997.

How to calculate hinged support, normal thrust and shear of a three hinged circular arch

This construction video tutorial is based structural analysis. You will learn how to make calculation of reaction at the support as well as normal thrust and shear for three hinged circular arch.

This video is presented by renowned engineer Mr. Parag Pal.
Three hinged system:
a. A three hinged system comprises of two plates, attached collectively with a hinge containing two hinged supports A and B resting on the ground.
b. When the plates 1 and 2 comprises of curved bars, the system is known as a three-hinged arch.
c. The distance 1 among the centers of the hinges at the support is known as the span of arch.
d. When distance f from the center of the crown hinge to the straight line going through the former two is defined as its rise.
The reactions of a three hinged arch will be completely established with four parameters, as for example, the amounts of reaction Ha, Hb, Va, and Vb.
So, a three hinged system is always statically determinate.
Benefits:
a. The bending moments and shears operative over cross sections of three hinged arches are significantly smaller as compared to the subsequent stresses in a simple beam covering the equivalent span and bearing the same load. So, three hinged arches are inexpensive relating to ordinary beams, specifically for large span structures.
b. Calculations are very simple as compared to other type of arches.
c. No bending moments are generated at the abutments and the crown since hinges cannot withstand moments.
d. Differential settlements of the supports do not impact stresses, since the pines or hinges allow the arch to assume the slightly different shape consequent upon settlement.
e. The pin joints allow the arch to modify itself to expansions and contractions because of alterations in temperature.
In this video, solution is given to the following problem: A three-hinged circular arch hinged at the springing and crown points contain a span of 40 m and a central rise of 8 m. It bears a consistently distributed load 20 kN/m over the left-half of the span collectively along with a concentrated load of 100 kN at the right quarter span point.
Determine the supports, normal thrust and shear at a section 10 m from left support.
To get the solution, go through the following video tutorial.

Different types of beam section in RCC structures

In this construction video tutorial, you will gather information on different types of beam section in RCC structures. Usually, there are three types of beam sections which range from balanced beam section , under reinforced beam section and over reinforced beam section.

It is known that a beam comprises of two components i.e. reinforcement and concrete.

Balanced Beam Section: If the ratio of steel to concrete in a section prevails in such a manner that the strain in steel and strain in concrete attain their maximum values all at once, the section is identified as a balanced or critical section and the percentage of steel in this section is defined as critical steel percentage.

Under-Reinforced Beam Section: Under-reinforced section: A section that contains steel percentage below the critical percentage is called as under-reinforced section. As steel lacks to adjust compression in concrete, the tensile strain in steel attains yield value whereas the highest compressive strain in concrete is under its ultimate crushing value.

The section undertakes large rotational deformations from the preliminary phase of yielding of steel to the final stage of crushing of concrete, providing adequate warning of impending failure.

Given below, an extensive lists of different types of basic geometry formulas :-

Yielding of steel in under-reinforced beam section does not signify that the structure has failed, because if steel yields, extreme deflection and cracking in beam will happen prior to failure which provides sufficient time to occupants to escape ahead of the section fails.

The failure in under-reinforced beam section occurs as the concrete attains its ultimate failure strain of 0.0035 prior to steel attains its failure strain which is greater than 0.20 to 0.25.
Over-Reinforced Beam Sections: Reinforced concrete beam sections, in which the failure strain in concrete is attained sooner than the yield strain of steel is obtained, are known as over-reinforced beam sections.
If over-reinforced beam is designed and loaded to complete strength then the steel in tension zone will not yield much prior to the concrete attains its ultimate strain of 0.0035. It happens because of little yielding of steel, the deflection and cracking of beam does not happen and provide enough warning prior to failure.
Failures in over-reinforced sections happen suddenly. This type of design is not approved in practice of beam design.

How to design the RCC columns inexpensively

This construction article is extracted from https://theconstructor.org. The articles sheds light on how to minimize the cost by creating the design of reinforcement column as well as its construction practices and recommendations inexpensively.

Columns are considered as the most vital components in reinforced concrete structures and they ensure the security and constancy of the structure significantly.

Because of various factors, the cost of a column for each linear meter per MPa of load bearing strength fluctuates considerably. As for instance, the position of the column in the structure (outside column and inside column) and the configuration of the loads enforced on the column and others.
Given below, some other types of recommendations and measure which can reduce the cost of designing and development of reinforced concrete column significantly.
Recommendations for inexpensive design of Reinforced Concrete Columns
1. Potency of concrete used for reinforced concrete column
2. Formwork employed for casting reinforced concrete column
3. Steel reinforcements applied in the reinforced concrete column construction
4. Details of reinforcement of concrete column

Strength of Concrete for Reinforced Concrete Column
An important recommendation given for concrete strength is the utilization of utmost concrete compressive strength required to bear factored loads and least allowable reinforcement ratio. It is due to the lowest price that should be attained when such measure is undertaken as the cost of reinforcement decreases.

It is suggested that, if the least reinforcement ratio is employed for a specified column, it can minimize total column cost considerably (around 32% for concrete strength of 56MPa and 57% for concrete strength of 100MPa) relating to the case where highest reinforcement ratio is applied.
The nominal size of columns in multi storied structures is indicated on the basis of the utmost concrete compressive strength and a constraint on the highest reinforcement ratio.

If the size of column is smaller than the least permissible size at the base of the structure, then reinforcement ratio should be reduced.
Lastly, both reinforcement ratio and concrete compressive strength are reduced as the enforced factored loads decline in the upper stories.
To gather more information on recommendations, go through the following article theconstructor.org

Brief explanation of rebaring method in reinforced concrete construction

Rebaring technique in reinforced concrete construction stands for a process that is undertaken for fabricating and arranging of reinforcement bars perfectly based on the design and drawings intended for RCC works.
It is known fact that concrete is very durable in compression and weak in tension. The reinforcement bars alias rebars are strong in tension and these are combined with concrete to employ its tension property.
The responsible engineer produces the calculation of reinforcement bar for a reinforced concrete work. The engineer supplies us the particular details of the number of reinforcement bars as well as the shape and size of each bar for each work.

The responsible engineer produces the calculation of reinforcement bar for a reinforced concrete work. The engineer supplies us the particular details of the number of reinforcement bars as well as the shape and size of each bar for each work.
Various types of loads like tension, compression, lateral, horizontal and torsion are available which develop from pressure. To determine the strength of concrete, you have to find out whether concrete can withstand these loads or not.
The strength obtained by the R.C.C structure is based on the method and the techniques to be used for setting up the reinforcement bar. The reinforcement bars are primarily patterned over its surface to allow perfect bonding with the concrete.
Importance of Rebaring Technique in Reinforced Concrete Construction: The steel reinforcement usually is segregated into two categories i.e.
• Primary Reinforcement or Main Steel reinforcement
• Secondary reinforcement or distribution reinforcement
The objective of applying main steel reinforcement bars in R.C.C structures is to maintain resistance capacity for withstanding the entire design loads delivered to it. The secondary reinforcement bars are primarily used to maintain longevity and elegant look.
This reinforcement ensures to keep resistance for localized areas like limited cracking. These can also combat the stresses produced because of divergences in temperature.
The main bars which are used with indicated diameter, are bent at the ends. The stirrups belong to reinforcements which are arranged laterally, to place the main bars of the structural elements like beams and columns, in exact location.
The stirrups may come in various shapes like circular, square, rectangular, helical or diamond on the basis of the cross-section of the structural element. The reinforcement bars in the corners may appear as L – shaped.
The caging for the structural element to be decided should be perfectly fastened so as to keep the position of each bar unchanged throughout concreting. This is a check that should be always maintained throughout concreting otherwise it can hamper the stability of the structural member.
The rebars are primarily arranged at the junctions where the formwork of the structural element is closed and at the point where a new structural element should be fastened with the former one.

Reinforcement details for slabs-on-ground with crack control factors

While designing the slabs, which are built up on ground, the crack control factors should be taken into account. Given below, reinforcement details for slabs-on-ground.
The density and the design of the slabs-on-ground are dependent on the cracks which are developed because of the external loading. The calculation for slab thickness is made on the basis of the suppositions of a slab being unreinforced and un-cracked.
For specific situations of slabs on ground, the steel reinforcement can offer a great solution. The characteristics of this method contains the following :-
1. The limiting of cracks occur because of shrinkage
2. Apply bigger joint spacing that is larger than the unreinforced slabs
3. The possibilities for cracks development may be avoided by provision for moment capacity and constancy for those areas.
4. Cracking can’t be resisted with the integration of reinforcement. These elements allow in minimizing or adjusting the produced crack width by genuinely raising the frequency of cracks that is created.
If a reinforcement design is proportioned and arranged perfectly, it can allow to restrain the width of the crack significantly and therefore the serviceability period of the slab is not impacted.
Thickness Design Methods for Slabs-on-Ground Construction
When reinforcement in the slab design is applied increasingly, the un-cracked strength of the slab is slightly affected. The various methods for thickness design like Pickett’s Analysis Method (PCA), WRI (Wire Reinforcement Institute) Design Method and COE methods can be employed for creating the design of slabs on ground with reinforcement.
Reinforcement for Slabs-on ground for Crack Width Control Only
The width of crack can be restrained by reinforcement on the basis of the two factors like the joint spacing and the thickness of the slab. Otherwise we can define the crack width control as a function of joint space and slab thickness.
There should be a minimum steel ratio of 0.5% of the slab cross section to facilitate the saw cut of contraction joints to be removed.
When the reinforcement is arranged, it is suggested to set the reinforcement bars nearer to the surface of the slab top surface devoid of compromising the minimum concrete coverage over the reinforcement.

How to design the reinforced concrete wall

You have to design the Reinforced concrete wall similar to a compression member. Reinforced concrete wall is suitable when there are no beams and load transmitted from the slab is massive or the density of the masonry wall is restrained.
RCC Wall is segregated as follow:
• Plain concrete wall, when rein. < 0.4%
• Reinforced concrete wall, when rein. > 0.4%

Load from slab is transmitted as axial load to wall. When depth is greater, it is known as RC wall. Design is identical to a RC column, breadth is similar to the density of wall and depth is equivalent to 1m. The design of RCC Wall is based on the following factors.
• Axially loaded wall
• Axially loaded with uniaxial bending
Categorization of concrete walls:
1. Plain concrete wall
2. Reinforced concrete wall
Under plain concrete wall, the reinforcement included is under 0.4% of c/s. In reinforced concrete wall, the proportion of employed steel is in excess of 0.4% and is designed in the same way as reinforced concrete columns. Slenderness ratio is equivalent to minimum of (l/t or h/t), where, l denotes effective length of wall, h stands for effective height of wall, t stands for thickness of wall. When < 12, the wall becomes short and if > 12, the wall becomes slender.
Braced and Unbraced Concrete Walls:
Braced: If cross walls are arranged for the walls so as to they can bear lateral load and 2.5% of vertical load, then the wall is defined as braced. If not, the wall is called as unbraced wall.
Note: Other walls under special cases are,
i) Cantilever wall
ii) Shear walls – To withstand lateral loads [Handle flexure created because of lateral loading on the structure, depth is allowed along the transverse direction]

Analysis and Design of Concrete Retaining Wall

Concrete Retaining Wall Design: Before starting, initially, we should verify the constancy of the retaining wall. Besides, verification should be done for overturning and sliding prior to continue with the design.
The bearing under the foundation should also be examined. If the soil provides support to the wall, bearing pressure below the foundation of wall shall be under the acceptable bearing capacity.
To start with, you should inspect the retaining wall and determine the bending moments and shear forces with the use of an analysis software like SAP2000 or PROKON or any other software or with calculations by hand. If there are dissimilarities like steps in the retaining wall and the emphasis is given on stress variation of the wall, you can utilize software like SAP2000 or ANSIS.
Calculations by hand can be performed for basic retaining walls which do not contain lots of complications. As for instance, cantilever retaining wall is examined by making its behavior simple. You can imagine the boundary condition "fixed" at base to get the bending moments and shear forces of the wall. Once the wall forces are detected, you can get the forces of the base of the wall. The most suitable process will be applying a software to locate the bending moments and shear forces.
