Spreadsheets for Civil Engineering

Estimators used columnar sheets of paper to organize the take off and the estimate itself into rows of items and columns containing the description, quantity and the pricing components. Some of these were similar to accounting ledger paper. They became known as green sheets or spreadsheets.

With the advent of computers in business, estimators began using spreadsheet applications like VisiCalc, Lotus 1-2-3, and Microsoft Excel to duplicate the traditional tabular format, while automating redundant mathematical formulas.

Construction management & general contracting are useful for managing a construction project efficiently

General contracting and construction management are the inherent part of a construction project. Both of them are useful for coordinating and handling projects. But there are basic differences concerning the organizational structure, business relationships, and project entry points.

General Contracting: A general contractor deals with the supervision and management of a construction project. The general contractor accomplishes diversified functionalities as below :-
  • appoint and administer subcontractors
  • Correspond with and between subcontractors
  • Coordinate and plan all job from beginning to completion
  • Look into the matter so that subcontractors get payment in a timely manner
  • Organize all work to be completed with the project

The GC is an individual, partnership, corporation, or business body liable for controlling and executing construction related works. There are several well qualified peoples like supervisors, general labor, subcontractors as well as other trades who work in tandem with GC in construction projects. Generally the GC manages the complete project but he/she can also perform with a particular section ranging from the foundation or masonry.

On the basis of design suggested by the client, the GC generally works on a bid process. The client can appoint the GC depending on the low-priced bid, top qualifications, or other scale. Profit can be gained if the GC is capable of executing the project lower than the bid price. If the project contains unanticipated costs, the client will have to reimburse more, modify the project specs, or trim down the project's scope.

Construction Management: The duties and responsibilities of a construction manager are identical with the general contractor. However, the CM is not involved directly on the jobsite where there are general labors or other trade works. The CM plays a similar role of a project manager. The construction manager takes the responsibilities for the planning, coordination, and management of the project on the whole. The main functionality of the construction manager is to offer the client with a functional project.

A CM is appointed to a project prior to a GM generally joins. The CM contributes to the design progression; provide suggestions on desired features, specifications and materials chosen. The CM will frequently offer proposals useful for enhancing the value of the project upon completion and arranging the project for smooth running.

The construction manager performs on the basis of a percentage relating to the project costs. A CM is generally selected for qualifications over lowest price. A construction manager will employ the subcontractors and tradesmen generally via a bid process.

Civil Works Application Helps Get Rid of On-Site Errors

A new iOS and Android application named as CivilWorks aims to help managers and supervisors stay up to date with on-site civil construction activity.

Created by On-Site Civil Solutions, the user-friendly app lets forefront workers perform calculations, input data and email their results to those in charge when they need signing-off on critical work decisions.

Company director Shane Dodd said: Rework - and its lost productivity, ballooning timeframes and added costs - is a global problem. In fact, it is estimated that Australian contractors lose around $177 million-plus annually doing rework caused by on-site calculation errors and poor communication systems.

This application handles sewer main and drainage construction calculations, civil engineering calculations, road and civil construction formulas, and civil volume calculations.

Specially, it calculates converts and adjust grades, determines the correct values for setting reduced levels, new benchmarks and jump up heights. In addition, it performs basic area calculations, as well as cube, cylinder, stockpile and selects trench backfill volume calculations that you can set to include weight conversion factors specific to the stuff you are using.

The application is divided into five sections: Grade & Level Calculator; Area, Volume & Weight Calculator; Ground Conditions; Asset Recording; and Set Out a Point.

CivilWorks retains all the on-site data on-screen to make sure errors do not occur. Calculations, input data and results can then be emailed, at the touch of a button, to supervisors for approval, ordering and confirmation.

In Recent times, the emergence of green buildings, are increased to a great extent due to energy efficiency and environmental friendliness nature. Renewable resources like sunlight, plants, rainwater are used in green buildings. The construction professionals use energy and water resistant technologies to create the structure of the green buildings. The following are some useful materials for constructing a green building :-

Coco Tiles: Coco tile is created with reclaimed coconut husks with sing non-hazardous zero-VOC adhesives and ecological friendly methods. This handy sustainable design element can be applied for wall covering, furniture and interior designing. This green materials are customized to be applied with decorative tiles having intricate basket-weave. All the tiles have low-VOC resin as finished materials. Saudi Arabia constructs Biggest Water Treatment Plant in Riyadh

Saudi Arab’s National water supplier has recently finished the construction of largest wastewater treatment plant.
 
This is a mega project, which cost 400 million-riyal ($107 million) project in Riyadh. This is sixth of its kind in the desert kingdom, which will produce 400,000 cubic meters of treated water a day by the end of the year to serve the growing urban population.
 
The state-run usefulness is also building the biggest water storage facility in the kingdom’s most populous city at a cost of 1.8 billion riyals.

Saudi Arabia’s Construction News

The Saudi state projects are part of a 51 billion-riyal water-resources investment in cities including the capital, Mecca and port of Jeddah, Chief Executive Officer Luay Al Musallam said last year.
 
For 2014, the government of the world’s biggest crude exporter had allocated 16.6 billion riyals for desalination projects to boost potable supplies to a population that is quadrupled to 30 million in four decades.
